Fiddler's Green now has a piper
Bill Millen, the piper of the Normandy invasion, has stepped into the clearing at the end of the path. I suspect, as apparently did Lord Lovatt, that the restriction on pipes in combat was less about the risk of attracting enemy fire than it was to coddle the tender sensibilities of the Sassenach, who have painful ancestral memories of the pipes *facing* them in battle. Those poor Germans didn't stand a chance.
